Case Study: Upgrading Military Surveillance Technology

Subject: Persistent Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (PISR)

The Challenge:

The Tactical Remote Sensor Systems (TRSS) is the only organic unattended ground sensor capability for the DoD client. It is a system that the customer has been using for decades to autonomously provide continuous, unattended surveillance of distant areas of the battlespace in places too dangerous for military personnel and/or not tactically practical to deploy other surveillance systems. TRSS provides a ground surveillance capability for remote, all-weather detection, location determination, and the monitoring of enemy activity. Current detection methods include seismic, acoustic, magnetic, and imaging (thermal and electro-optical).  Updating and adding new capabilities to an aging system is a continual challenge, especially while using legacy hardware without interrupting current missions and deployments of the system.

The Solution:

Applying cybersecurity expertise throughout the hardware and software systems enhancement process, Sentar is delivering a refreshed TRSS system by creating and developing a totally new software, while also using current/legacy hardware with it. This new software incorporates new technologies that will leverage advance capabilities such as cloud-based database systems, network and internet access, the new MILWAVES communication system, and interoperability with other similar systems within the military ecosystem. Our team of Software Developers/Engineers, Integrators, and Testers are using Scrum-Agile methodology and newer development techniques and tools throughout the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) from the creation and maintenance of the software, to integrating it within the existing operating system, to testing for its viability and effectiveness.

The Mission Impact:

Protect Warfighters and Enhancing Combat Effectiveness:

During this active project, the Sentar team successfully fielded an enhanced software version in 2019 that improved interoperability, reliability, and capability of the TRSS system. This new software, with its additional features and capabilities, provides a more efficient and effective surveillance system, improving the protection of our warfighters.
