Inspiring the Next Generation of Cybersecurity Professionals

In this day and age, technology seems to permeate evermore into not only our own lives, but our children’s as well. The general consensus towards the rapid integration of technology seems to be positive in most cases, and allows for the simplification and expedition of day-to-day tasks. As general computer knowledge and overall use continues to climb, our children are getting more facetime with technology than ever before. Fortunately for the iPad playing pre-teens, this baseline familiarity with technology will handily transfer to their future professional careers, albeit unbeknownst to them.

Behold: The future of both Computer Science and Cybersecurity fields.

The newer generations seem to be not only more comfortable utilizing technology, but more resilient and adaptable concerning technological change. As any veteran in this field might tell you, technical skill and adaptability are extremely important skills for the Cyber professional to master. According to Moore’s Law, processing power for computers is estimated to double about every two years. This is just further evidence that our field needs adaptable candidates.

Cybersecurity has been a hot topic for the last decade and is showing no signs of slowing down. As such, many high schools are jumping on the train and creating a Cybersecurity curriculum, which will hopefully introduce future professionals to the prospect of pursuing Cybersecurity as a career path. Extracurricular education is also a great option for the up-and-coming. Huntsville has luckily been blessed with the opening of the US Space and Rocket Center’s Cyber Camp, which gives kids aged 15-18 the opportunity to delve into the world of cyber technologies through hands-on experiences and challenges, learning about Cyber careers and networking with Cyber professionals along the way. Students of all ages across the country should be encouraged to research Cybersecurity clubs close to them.

In the next couple of decades, Cybersecurity is bound to keep up its pace. Due to the need for experienced professionals and the subsequent nationwide lack thereof, the field itself keeps workers on their toes. To say that the industry is enticing and a good move career-wise is an understatement. The only thing our kids need to jumpstart a fulfilling career in Cybersecurity is a little bit of interest and a helpful push.
