Sentar Wins MDA Phase I
for Software Risk Assessment Technology Development
April 27, 2010Software from third parties is often used in mission
critical systems. While known malicious code will be identified
during normal test and evaluation processes, suspicious code is
more difficult to accurately identify.

PLV Ground Support Software
National Missile Defense
Payload Launch Vehicle (PLV) Ground Support Software (GSS)
Contractor: Lockheed Martin Missiles and Space (LMMS)
"SENTAR has been providing top notch mission critical software
development for the GMDS Payload Launch Vehicle Ground Support
Software for over five years. This has made possible the successful
launch and boost phase flight control for the flight tests necessary
to support this key national defense program. SENTAR people always
get the tough jobs done right and on schedule."
Brian Whitfield
Manager PLV Ground Support Systems
Lockheed
Sentar provides the LMMS customer with experienced software
developers for the design, development and maintenance of the PLV
GSS. The GSS is responsible for prelaunch testing and launching the
PLV and guiding it to a point in space. When the PLV reaches the
specified location in space, a Exoatmospheric Kill Vehicle (EKV) is
deployed with the intent of intercepting a ballistic target. The GSS
includes multiple processes executing on multiple Sun Sparcstation 20
computers to accomplish this incredibly complicated task. Sentar
supported the development of GSS from the beginning requirements
phase to the current maintenance phase. Support has included
requirements analysis, object oriented design using the Shlaer-Mellor
methodology, Ada and C/C++ development, unit testing, and technical
leadership. Sentar process experts defined the software processes
used for GSS development. During critical test missions, Sentar
employees are called upon to travel to the Kwajalein Atoll of the
Marshall Islands in the Pacific Ocean for technical support. As a
result of a 100 percent launch success rate, Sentar has won repeat
business from LMMS for the last five years. |

ISTC Integration/ISTC Monitoring and Support

National Missile Defense
Integrated System Test Capability (ISTC)
Payload Launch Vehicle (PLV) Ground Support Equipment (GSE)
Contractor: Lockheed Martin Missiles and Space (LMMS)
"For development, test and operation of key GMD system
simulations, we can always count on Sentar's dedicated, experienced
professionals to deliver the quality results we require."
Rich Thomas, PLV & CLE Simulations
Lockheed
Sentar provides the LMMS customer with an experienced team of
software developers and analysts for the development and maintenance
of the ISTC PLV/GSE product. ISTC is a generic test bed maintained
at the Advanced Research Center (ARC) and GBR Development
Integration Lab (GDIL) in Huntsville, AL. In addition, the PLV/GSE
software is also provided to the System Integration Lab (SIL) test
bed. PLV/GSE is used in risk reduction activities for the LMMS
Ground Support Software (GSS) such as pre-mission tests and
post-test analysis. The core of the PLV/GSE product is GSS launch
code. The development team integrates the representative GSS code
with a LMMS developed PLV booster model and then adapts it to run in
the ISTC test environment. PLV/GSE allows investigators to determine
how the GSS code will behave on flight day regardless of if that
date is in the past or in the future. Sentar support for PLV/GSS has
included requirements analysis, object oriented design using the
Shlaer-Mellor methodology, Ada, and C/C++ development and technical
leadership. |

THAAD Software Process, Launcher Software
Theater
High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD)
Engineering and Manufacturing Development (EMD)
Contractor: Lockheed Martin Missiles and Space (LMMS)
Sentar provided Software Process Engineers (SPEs) in support of
Lockheed Martin's
System Software Engineering (SSE) department for the Theater High
Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) Engineering and Manufacturing
Development (EMD) phase. Sentar's support of this project included
the development of standard software engineering and management
processes and procedures, developing the Software Process Assets
Repository (SPAR), supporting training activities, and ensuring
team members were implementing the defined processes. This support
activity provided a plan for Lockheed Martin Missiles & Space to
obtain SEI CMM® Level 3 - The Defined Level. Sentar's SPEs also
defined and developed the certification plan to move to Level 4 -
The Managed Level. |

Integrated Theater Air/Missile Defense System (ITADS)
Theater Air/Missile Defense System (ITADS)
System Software Engineering
Contractor: Lockheed Martin Missiles and Space (LMMS)
- Created an abstract/generic map interface, which allowed ITADS
to drive a map without it actually knowing the “exact” map
instance/application.
- Created an IPC-application based on MS COM out-of-proc server
which allowed the ITADS map functionality to be implemented by
another process (hosting an Autometer/Edge based map).
- Created an Autometer COM-Layer in-proc server, which
interfaced/translated the abstract/generic map interface methods
with/to Autometer/Edge API and concepts.
- Created an Autometer/Edge base map application for
managing/hosting the COM layers.
